A ‘blog’ (derived from weblogs) is a personal website which documents the authors opinions, thoughts and observations. They are frequently updated and written in a personal tone as anyone can have a blog – there is no training needed and they are not approved or monitored by anyone other than the author.

The initial purpose for blogs were for people to list links of useful websites along with comments i.e. sharing information with a common group. They have since evolved and a blog can take many forms from a vanity project allowing someone to simply publish their ideas to the masses, a way to promote products, provide information, create discussion, keep people abroad in touch with their families etc etc. There is a good chance that a blog exists about anything that might interest you!
You will find blogs written by politicians, sports personalities, TV presenters and other notable public figures. They are also the centre of many controversies due to their uninhibited nature – remember a blog is your opinion and you can legally say what you want, just be careful of any repercussions!
Many blogs take the form of an article or piece written by the author on their chosen subject. Most then open themselves up to comments which the author can choose to edit or not! A blog will also archive past articles, categorise them and allow you to search for articles by date. It is not unusual to have to register on a blog site in order to post comments.
